Lenten Rose V / Helleborus x hybridus

Helleborus x hybridus ‘Sparkling Diamond’ – One of the Winter Jewels Series and the perfect addition to any ‘Alba’ garden. ‘Sparkling Diamond’ features slightly nodding, fully double flowers of pure white (with the occasional soft pink picotee). This floriferous strain blooms from March to May, is deer resistant and hardy to zone 5. Grows to 14″ tall.

Helleborus x hybridus ‘Jade Star’ – Green flowers may be an acquired taste but there are few gardeners who can resist these single pale jade blooms that are veined or picoteed in a deep burgundy red and nicely contrasted by pale yellow stamens. Bred by Marietta O’Byrne of Oregon, ‘Jade Star’ flowers from late winter into early spring and grows 12-18″ high. Hardy to zone 5.

Helleborus x hybridus ‘Painted Doubles’ – These Hellebores are the big wow of the garden and it’s no wonder, when each and every bloom is a work of art. The fully double white flowers are heavily spotted or streaked in deep rose pink, accenting each and every flower petal (or sepal). ‘Painted Doubles’ grows to 14″ high, has an ultimate spread of 24″ and is hardy to zone 5.

Helleborus x hybridus ‘Cherry Blossom’ – Another mixed strain in the Winter Jewels Series that is really garnering a lot of attention of late. The single to semi-double anemone form blooms come in pale pink with cherry red veining, streaks, picotees or even a central starburst. ‘Cherry Blossom’ is another of Marietta O’Byrne’s creations. Grows to 18″ tall and hardy to zone 5.

Helleborus x hybridus ‘Harvey Hybrids Singles’ – A mixed strain of carefully selected single Lenten Rose developed by Joe Harvey, a retired geneticist from Victoria, British Columbia. These plants have excellent vigour and flower from late winter into early spring. As can be seen by the image on the right, many of them are also nicely spotted. Grows to 18″ high and hardy to zone 5.
