Groundcover Sedum Suitable for Green Roofs

sedumreflexumbluemagic (295x300)Sedum reflexum BLUE MAGIC (syn. Sedum rupestre) – This new Sedum introduction for 2013 features needle-like evergreen foliage that matures to a sky or powder blue – taking on distinct reddish-purple highlights in the colder winter weather. It bears bright lemon yellow blooms from June to July that attract butterflies. Grows 4″ high by 8-12″ wide. Hardy to zone 3.

sedumacreaureum (300x296)Sedum acre ‘Aureum’ – The Golden Moss Stonecrop works well as a groundcover between stepping stones and its invasive nature makes it one of the tougher species to use in green roof systems. The reliably evergreen foliage emerges a bright creamy-yellow and fades to lime green, with starry yellow blooms in summer. Grows 2-3″ high by 12″ wide. Hardy to zone 5.

sedumcoralcarpet (300x296)Sedum album ‘Coral Carpet’ – A drought tolerant cultivar for hot, exposed sites – ‘Coral Carpet’ forms a dense mat of rounded green bead-like leaves (that emerge coral-coloured) which shift to a dramatic bronze-red in winter. Starry white flowers (occasionally pale pink) appear over the foliage from May to June. It is also reliably evergreen. Grows 4″ high by 18″ wide. Zone 3.

sedummoonshadow (300x298)Sedum reflexum MOONSHADOW (syn. Sedum rupestre) Another new introduction for 2013, MOONSHADOW features evergreen sulfur-yellow foliage that looks very needle-like and takes on subtle bronze-red highlights on the tips in winter. From early to midsummer it bears flat-topped yellow flower clusters on stems above the foliage. Grows 4″ high by 8-12″ wide. Zone 3.

sedumalbumgreenice (300x295)Sedum album ‘Green Ice’ – While many groundcover Sedum change foliage colours in the colder winter weather, ‘Green Ice’ holds its bright olive green hue, making it a nice contrast to other Sedum in the green roof mix. It bears pure white star-shaped blooms from early to midsummer and is reliably evergreen. Drought tolerant. Grows 3-4″ high by 12-18″ wide. Zone 3.
