Lavender IV / Lavandula

lavintermediawalburtonsilveredge (300x297)Lavandula x intermedia ‘Walberton’s Silver Edge’ (syn. ‘Walvera’, ‘Silver Edge’) – This Lavandin or cross of Lavandula angustifolia and L. spicata features broad greyish-green foliage, with a creamy white edge. It bears pale purplish-blue flowers starting in midsummer (July-August) and was discovered at Walberton Nursery. Drought tolerant. Grows 30″ high by 36″. Zone 6.

lavstoechasluxurious (300x287)Lavandula stoechas ‘Luxurious’ – A beautiful cultivar of Spanish Lavender with near-black flowers studded on a pineapple-like bloom, topped with royal purple bracts. It flowers from May through to October with regular deadheading. This species has a higher camphor level, giving it a pleasant pungent scent but it is too strong for culinary use. Grows 24″ high and wide. Zone 6.

lavandulagoodwincreek (295x300)Lavandula x ginginsii ‘Goodwin Creek’ (syn. ‘Goodwin Creek Grey’) – This cross of Lavandula dentata and l. lanata was discovered as a chance seedling at Goodwin Creek Gardens in Oregon. It features intense silvery-grey foliage and tall stems of purplish-blue flowers from summer through to fall. Tolerates high humidity. Grows 2-3′ high and wide. Hardy to zone 7.

lavsuperblue (300x289)Lavandula angustifolia ‘SuperBlue’ (syn. ‘Super Blue’) – A very  hardy and compact form of English Lavender which is useful for gardeners in colder regions. It bears very large (reportedly the largest blooms of any Lavandula angustifolia) of fragrant deep purplish-blue flowers starting in June. An excellent choice for oil production. Grows 10-12″ high by 14″ wide. Hardy to zone 4.

lavdwarfblue (300x291)Lavandula angustifolia ‘Dwarf Blue’ – Another compact English Lavender with highly fragrant , rich blue flowers that begin to emerge late spring – generally blooming from June to August. It features greyish-green foliage and a very uniform growth habit, making it a good choice for informal hedges, such as around the vegetable garden. Grows 12″ high by 15-18″ wide. Zone 5.
